Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station. It used to be
the summer resort of the royalty. The British East India Company
finding the cooler environs of Mount Abu to be very congenial
built a cantonment here and till India's independence in 1947
the British Imperial army occupied the cantonment.
Apart from evergreen hills and beautiful mountains, Mount
Abu has many temples of the Jain sect. The Dilwara temple
for instance is made out of the finest variety of Ambaji marble
and the temple consists of the shrines of Adinath, Neminath,
Mahavira, Rishavdeva and Pareshnath.
There is also the majestic Vimal Basahi temple which is
dedicated to the first Jain tirthankar - Adinath. This temple
was built by Gujrat's first Solanki king - Bhim Dev. He spent
a stagering 18 crore 53 lakh rupees to complete this magnificent
temple. There are 48 pillars and 52 gods and goddesses of
the Hindu pantheon are enshrined in the temple.
The shimmering Nakki Lake in the center of Mount Abu is
one of the most popular tourist site of Rajasthan. The lake
is famous for its strange rock formations. The best known
rock is Toad Rock which looks exactly like a Toad. There are
other rock formations like Nun Rock, Nandi Rock etc. Beside
the Nakki Lake is the 14th century Raghunath Temple.
In Mount Abu, there are various vantage points like Sunset
point, Honeymoon Point, the Crags and Robert's Spur to name
just a few.
There is also the Adhar Devi temple which is 3 kms. out of
town. A flight of 200 steps leads one to this holy Durga temple
which is situated in a natural cleft of a rock. From the temple,
the panoramic views of Mt. Abu is absolutely breath taking.
Worth visiting is Guru Shikhar which at 1721 metre happens
to be the highest point of Rajasthan. The Atri Rishi Temple
is located here.
10 kms. South-East of the town is Gaumukh where water gushes
out from a marble made cow's mouth giving the shrine its name.
The tank here is said to be the site of the sacrificial fire
made by sage Vasishta from which four great Rajput clans were
born.
The 14th century Raghunathji's temple which was founded
by Guru Ramananda is also worth visiting where Guruji's foot
prints are still preserved.
To the north of Nakki lake, there is Madhuvan and Om Shanti
Bhavan which has been built by the Brahma Kumari World Spiritual
University.
Make it a point to visit the Achaleshwar Temple, which was
built in 813 A.D. The walls of the temple are adorned with
images of Hindu gods and goddesses. A brass made Nandi too
is here at this temple. Legend has it that from the Mandakini
Kunda located in the temple premises, the demons used to drink
ghee or butter until Raja Adipal killed them.
