Jaisalmer is a gilded fantasy juxtaposed in a formidable
desert. To say the least, it is a shimmer of sand amidst the
sun soaked sky.
Jaisalmer Fort is the stellar attraction standing on a hill
to the south overlooking the town. The base of the fort is
circled by a wall of solid stone blocks over which the Trikuta
hill projects, and supports the ramparts forming a double
line of defence. The bastions are in the form of half tours
surrounded by high turrets and joined by thick walls. Within
the fort are the carved palaces, havelies and balconies.
Every year Jaisalmer comes alive with the Desert Festival,
which is held in the month of February. The festival is held
on the enchanting background of the majestic Jaisalmer fort.
The festival itself is a riot of colors with the desert folks
dancing and singing evocatively of the triumphs and tragedies
of the land. From scary snake charmers to traditional gymnasts
and amusing puppet shows to enchanting folk music recitals,
it is all there at the Jaisalmer desert festival. This mega
event is conducted in association with Rajasthan Tourism Development
Corporation.
With just a couple of days remaining for the festivities to
take off, one can see hordes of garishly colored camel cavalcades
proceeding towards the brilliant desert city of Jaisalmer.
As the D-days dawns, the whole of Jaisalmer reverberates with
enchanting Rajasthani folk music. It's not just the fort area
where the main event is held, but if one were to take a walk
along the narrow alleyways of this enchanting city, one will
come across musicians performing their art even inside abandoned
havelies. Such is the passion and excitement. In fact the
beating of the drums can be heard from all corners of Jaisalmer.
A bewildering array of folk music recitals are performed at
the festival premises and the show continues till late into
the night. The Desert Festival is a very prestigious event
especially for musicians. While the renowned musicians come
up with newer and more amazing performances, for the new faces,
the festival is a god given opportunity to display their talent
in front of a distinguished gathering.
Apart from music which of course is the piece de resistance
of the festival, a plethora of fascinating contests are also
held in the sidelines. For instance turban tying, moustache
making as well as the popular camel races all add to the fun
quotient of the festival. As far as the camel races are concerned,
it's a matter of pride and honor and needless to say, there
is intense competition among the participants.
