Pushkar Tours

PushkarAt a height of 1539 feet is the shining pearl of the desert-Pushkar. It is the abode of Brahma, the creator of the universe and also a much-venerated place for meditation by the sages of India. Pushkar is mentioned in many Hindu scriptures like Vedas, Puranas, Ramayana and Mahabharata.

In the past it used to be a center of Buddhism as well. Pushkar is surrounded by four hills - Savitri, Gayatri, Papmochani and Nag. It is the Nag hill which divides Pushkar from Ajmer. Pushkar is at its ethereal best during sunrise and sunset. In Pushkar one finds the temples of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswar from a maze of around 500 temples. The lanes and bylanes of Pushkar are dotted with colorful shops and the bylanes are so narrow that even Rickshaws can't ply here. So one has to travel on foot.

Pushkar is particularly renowned for its 15 ghats from among a total of 52 ghats. Gaughat, Barahaghat, Rajghat, Swarupghat and Panchavirghat are the most famous. If one takes bath in the holy Pushkar lake one attains moksha or liberation. There are many kunds or reservoirs in Pushkar and each has its own significance. For instance taking bath in Rupkund enhances beauty, Kapilkund banishes illness, Mukundamuni Ghat increases knowledge and so on and so forth.

Millions of people come to Pushkar in the months of October-November for taking bath in Holy Pushkar lake on the eve of Krishna Ekadasi. It is in Pushkar that the mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri were immersed.

On of the world's most bewildering desert festivals - Pushkar fair is held every year on the occasion of Kartick Purnima and lasts a full 10 days. The Pushkar fair started during the time of Jehangir and it continues till this time. Trading of everything ranging from enamelled articles, leather goods, dresses and ornaments take place at this enchanting fair. The camel fair in particular is very alluring.

While in Pushkar, don't miss out on the awesome Brahma Temple. A flight of 43 steps leads up to the main temple and inside the sanctum sanctorium is God Brahma, silver crown on head and sitted on a silver throne. The savitri hill is renowned for the Savitri Devi temple. There is also the statue of Saraswati where only girls can offer puja. The in-house kund of the temple has sweet water.

Another place worth visiting is the Ranganath temple. It is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and the presiding deity is that of Ranganathji.
